Air Toxics
Air toxics are compounds in the air that have the potential to harm our health. People exposed to air toxics at higher concentrations and over time may have an increased chance of getting cancer or experiencing other serious health effects. The District implements state and federal air toxics regulations, including the state AB 2588 Air Toxics Hot Spots Program.
The Air Toxics Hot Spots Information and Assessment Act of 1987 (Assembly Bill 2588 or AB 2588) is a State of California public right-to-know law requiring local air pollution control districts to collect information about the location, type, and quantity of toxic compounds emitted into the air from specified local businesses and industry.
AB 2588 requires businesses and industries throughout the state to: 1) quantify and report their emissions of air toxics; 2) assess the possible health risks from their emissions; 3) notify members of the public who are exposed to significant risks attributable to their emissions; and, 4) take steps to reduce this risk. As part of the AB 2588 Air Toxics Hot Spots Act Program, the District prepares a report annually to provide the public with information regarding the facilities within the District’s Air Toxics Hot Spot Program.
